"Pound 4 Pound"

"There Can Only Be ONE"

For the past three years, the sport of Boxing has been held hostage. As soon as you bring up the sport, only two names come to mind: Floyd “MONEY” Mayweather and Manny “PAC-MAN” Pacquiao. I’ve been in millions of conversations, read thousands of articles, and heard about a hundred “expert opinions”. Who is the “POUND 4 POUND” King? To come to an honest and unbiased conclusion, we have to first look at the FACTS and CRITICISMS about both
fighters. So let’s start with…..

FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER

Critics of Floyd “Gayweather” (as they say) have a list of assaults that they express on every article that mentions his name. Some of the comments are understandable. Some are unfair. But the majority of them are flat out ridiculous! But for the sake of remaining UNBIAS, I will state the beefs that sports fans have with Mayweather. First of all, the man is an arrogant, self-centered, idiot. He is all about flaunting himself, and his money, in the faces of people who would kill to make 0.1% (not 1%, that’s – point – one percent) of his salary. If he wants to throw money away, don’t burn it! Give it to someone less fortunate! His arrogance is even more evident in every interview he has ever taken. Before he ever steps into the ring to throw physical shots at his opponent, he spends months throwing verbal and offensive shots at them through the media. The guy is a jerk! Next, he doesn’t fight the best that his division has to offer. He has maintained his perfect 41-0 record by cherry-picking every fight that he has taken since becoming a star. Even more specifically, he’s SCARED to fight anyone who would be a threat to that undefeated record. The majority of his money must be spent on buying new underwear, because he wets himself at the mention of the name “PACQUIAO”. This whole drug-testing fiasco is just an excuse to refuse the fight. He would much rather beat up security guards, women, and children, than face a real challenge in the ring. When he finally musters up enough courage to take a fight, he doesn’t fight. He simply runs around the ring, throwing counter-shots, for 12 rounds. And finally, let’s examine his choice of opponents, starting with De La Hoya. Oscar was clearly out of his “prime” when they fought, but the fight was still close. Then Mayweather moves on to face Ricky Hatton, a naturally smaller boxer, who was more “undefeated” than he was “skillful”. After he comes back from a 2-year retirement, Floyd faces an even smaller Juan Manuel Marquez, and has the guts to ignore the weight limit that they negotiated. Then, in his final match, he faces a “washed-up” Sugar Shane Mosley. Each of these opponents had their flaws. In each case, all bets were on Mayweather, which made them each no real challenge at all. Did I get everything?

In my COUCH EXPERT OPINION: I learned a long time ago that if the other guy is bigger, faster, stronger, and more dangerous than me, I’m not crazy enough to call him names. So the “Gayweather” and “Fraud Maynever” comments are silly. The criticism of Floyd Mayweather goes overboard, and is fueled by personal hatred for him. I cannot comment on his personal life whatsoever. I have read the stories that have been out there about his problems with the law. What I do know is that if punishing your kids and taking away cell phones and luxuries that you paid for is a crime….my parents should be on the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted” list. The only facts I have are that one case has now been dismissed, and 2 out of 3 of his children are now living with him. As far as his boxing career, I also wanted to see him fight guys like Cotto and Margarito. What I’ve learned about Mayweather is that he wants the most popular fight possible, because it will give him the biggest payday possible. What we seem to forget is what happened to those guys who felt like they were worthy to fight Floyd. No more than two fights later, they were either knocked out or disqualified when facing a lesser opponent. To me, that means they were never worthy of a challenge. As far as the opponents he has faced, I have tremendous respect for his resume. De La Hoya was no longer in his “prime”, but Floyd paid him the respect of moving up to his weight division. After that fight, Hatton called Floyd out, and Floyd knocked Hatton out. While Floyd was on his 2-year retirement, we crowned Marquez #2 on the “Pound 4 Pound” list. Floyd comes back and dominates him, and we cry “FOUL”. With all the disrespect in the world, Mosley steps in the ring to challenge Floyd, and we thought it would make a good fight because he was a true Welter Weight. As always, Mayweather goes in and dominates. I don’t think he’s out of money, or afraid to fight ANYONE. I think he came back to take his throne back, and shut us up. This man is the self-proclaimed “VILLIAN”. It’s gotten him a lot of criticism, but also A LOT OF MONEY. There’s a reason why he’s part of the all-time highest grossing PPV event. The criticism of his 41-0 record is borderline insane. Since when do we find fault in PERFECTION. We can’t criticize the Patriot’s 16-0 season just because they played the Bills twice, Dolphins twice, Browns, and Redskins. (Sorry ‘Skins fans) I’ll move on. Anyone who questions his fighting style, is NOT a true fan of the sport. There has never been a DEFENSIVE TECHNICIAN like him. No one in the sport can match his accuracy. For us to criticize him for winning with his best weapons would be like playing one-on-one with LeBron James, BUT expecting him to only shoot from 3-pt range. Why would he do that
when he could easily drive and dunk on you a hundred times?

MANNY “PAC-MAN” PACQUIAO

Critics of Manny “Pacroid” (as they say) have a shorter, but equally interesting, list of complaints whenever his name is mentioned. Just as I did with Mayweather, I will stress that I feel most of these comments are born out of dislike for the guy, but I will oblige Pacquiao critics by listing them. The most popular one, of course, is the steroid accusation. What “clean” athlete won’t just end all suspicion and TAKE THE TEST? I know we’ve heard the “fear of blood” excuse and the “fear of needles” excuse, but the man has tattoos. Unless he went to one of those new, innovative Tattoo Parlors where they put on tattoos magically, I’m sure his markings required needles and blood. Let’s move on to his fight resume. Pacquiao really became a household boxing name with the De La Hoya fight. The same Oscar De La Hoya that Mayweather critics called “washed-up” 18 months prior. The only difference was that Oscar moved down 14 pounds to a weight he hadn’t fought at in 8 years, and he literally looked like a zombie. Then he moves on to the Hatton “bum” (what he was called after being KO-ed by Mayweather) and again faced a weight-drained zombie. From there, we have Miguel Cotto (damaged goods  after the Magarito fight), Joshua Clottey (who had no intention on fighting his good friend back), Antonia Margarito (fresh off an embarrassing suspension) and lastly, Shane Mosley (yes, the one that was washed-up a year ago) Did I get everything?

In my COUCH EXPERT OPINION: All the critics of Pacquiao are exactly right! Just joking. First off, remember my reasoning for not calling Mayweather silly names? [INSERT HERE] Because the same rules apply. Moving on. The steroid argument is a non-issue for me. I want Pacquiao to take the test, but I also cannot accuse him of something he has never proven to be guilty of. As of right now, he is only guilty of his suspicious response to being drug tested. Let’s be real about this drug testing issue by bringing it down to our level. Allow me to paint the scenario. I have been married for over 7 years. In that time, I have not had any mistresses, started a secret family, or fathered any illegitimate children. So my wife has no grounds to label me a “cheater”. Suppose one night we’re at home in our living room, watching a movie, and the entire time I’m interested in nothing, except my cell phone. I’m texting, and smiling, and in my own world. Feeling angry and neglected, she says, “Who are you smiling about and talking to? Let me see your cell phone!”  Can I peaceably and SAFELY refuse to meet her demands, simply because she has no proof that I’ve ever done anything wrong? I know some tough guy will puff out his chest and say, “Yeah!”, but us smart ones know the truth. I would want to SILENCE my accuser as soon as possible. That is what I feel an innocent Pacquiao needs to do. As far as his resume, Pacquiao has taken on every challenger the Welter Weight division has to offer. If we question a match for all the circumstances outside of the ring (weight-draining, weight-gaining, etc) we’d have to question every fight in history. He goes into every fight with one plan- RELENTLESS PRESSURE FROM EVERY ANGLE. The man is a machine, and he lays it all on the line in every round of every fight. “Pac-Man” should be on the cover of the next great boxing game, because only he and video game characters throw 8-punch combos.

My COUCH EXPERT CONCLUSION: Both fighters will be Hall of Famers one day. When you look at their resumes over the past 3 years, they are the same, give or take 2 or 3 fights. When you take their “common opponents”, Manny has won more impressively on some; Floyd has been more impressive against others. This argument is also voided by the #1 Law of Boxing: STYLES MAKE FIGHTS.  My conclusion is that on any serious “Pound 4 Pound” list, these two Masters of the sport should be listed as #1, and #1A. It doesn’t matter whose name you list first, because their names should be listed BESIDE one another. How can you definitively argue the better of two warriors who have cruised through every challenger whose been put in front of them (the same group of challengers), but who have also never faced the likes of one another? Mayweather is a DEFENSIVE BARRICADE. Pacquiao is an OFFENSIVE MACHINE. It reminds me of that famous paradox…..

“WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE (Manny Pacquiao) MEETS AN IMMOVABLE OBJECT (Floyd Mayweather)?”

Simple but very accurate information… Thaks for sharing this one.
    A must read post!

Good sir, I believe your marriage/cheating analogy re: Pacquiao is flawed because these situations just aren’t parallel. So let me counter your analogy with reality.

Let me paint you a picture. You have just won fighter of the year two out of three years, and are well on your way to a third time in four years after defeating a game Cotto. You are insanely popular, coming off two $20mil+ paydays in your last two (three?) fights. You are an icon in your home country, with a thriving side career as a movie star and entertainer, and a budding political career as well. You are possibly the most popular non-American boxer the world has ever seen.

Basically, you are on top of the world.

And then suddenly this guy comes out and starts raining on your parade. Starts calling you a cheater and a doper. Starts telling YOU what to do and demanding things from YOU. Would you really just comply meekly with all of those demands, as you say? Really?

I, for one, would do precisely what Manny did. I would be PISSED OFF. I would say, are you kidding me? This punk is telling me what to do? This punk is calling me names and slandering me? I don’t need this BS! I’m the man now. I’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m not letting some mouthy punk treat me this way. We’ve worked out all the other details, I’ve compromised on some things, if he’s unwilling to come to a compromise on this then screw him!

    • To this I’ll ask my 2nd question that I have asked every Pacquiao fan: HOW DO YOU MAKE EXCUSES FOR A GUY PROVING THAT HE IS CLEAN OR DIRTY? (especially when the commission testing never caught Mosley or Vargas. We have athletes in EVERY sport that are getting away with PEDs)

  3. This will be a fight that we may say “a style vs style”… “skills vs skills” …”intelligence vs abilities”… we will only know who is d best among the two until they fight each other…

“you may also not criticized Pacquiao’s ability and his ladder of success (from flyweight 106 lbs upto 145 lbs and unbreakable records (8division world title), and lopsided decision, unanimous decision, technical knockouts, knockouts victory over bigger guys without doing the same to mayweather”

The only thing you left out is that while Clottey is a defensive shell, “shell” is the key word. He never even tried to throw pumches. everyone knows that pacquiao hand picked that fight, they are great friends, and clottey had no intention of really fighting. a showing so bad, that he hasn’t gotten any real bids since it. floyd is better at defense and far more superior on offense than clottey. everyone also forgets that marquez is a 5-punch combo kinda guy, and you see what floyd did to that

  6. “who shows no desire to play defense and has suffered ruptured ear drums and much swelling”
these phrases give me credit for pacquiao and not for mayweather… you know y? because it does shows that pacquiao still can survive and make a tremendous fight result in favor of him no matter what kind of punishment gave him by his bigger opponents… so if if pac meets mayweather it’ll be a very closed fight but mayweather for sure can never score a knockout or knockdown to pacquiao because i know, you know that mayweather is not a big puncher than mosley, margarito and cotto… and their fight maybe will end in a decision… the question is…in favor of whom?…………… ………….. i bet for pacquiao due to a couple of punches (with a great speed and power that result a knockdown to cotto, mosley, and hatton) a couple of punches that was 5 times more than mayweathers punches.
Pacquiao punches will land surely on mayweathers body or face.. and no matter what kind of defense of mayweather.he will still be bothered by pacquiaos couple of heavy punches with speed and power… dont just rely or hide in mayweather’s fighting style (defense) just to say that this fighter never experience a great body damage in his boxing career and pacquiao is….

STILL defense is not the key to win against pacquaio.. because if you would still insist it.. i would only say that CLOTTEY’s DEFENSE when he fight PACMAN is BETTER THAN MAYWEATHERs DEFENSE hehehe…funny but true. a defense strategy is not the answer because still
“THE GREATEST DEFENSE IS OFFENSE” accept the fact that even though Clottey go for a defensive strategy for the whole fight he still feel and absorbed the pain caused by pacquiao’s power punches…and cant stand a chance to win the fight………..
REMEMBER that Mayweather is not a heavy puncher compare to pacquiao previous opponents and we often see that he is always in trouble everytime he was hit..
OBSERVE IT…..everytime he got hit by a big punch from opponents he used to never answer any punch back to his opponent…so if pacquiao give him a hit like what mosley did..and pac follow up a non stop punch…it will only result to referee stoppage.

  7. “WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE (Manny Pacquiao) MEETS AN IMMOVABLE OBJECT (Floyd Mayweather)?”
    this is my answer…
if you cud remember d seasonal punches of zab judah dat always landed on mayweather’s faced during early rounds and the left hook of ricky hatton that result to almost knockdown to mayweather and the straight punch made by mosley that rock mayweathers world … all of these mayweathers opponents didnt have the same speed and power like manny…so wat if or shud i say can you imagine if pacquiao’s punches with great power and speed land to mayweathers faced? the result is Knockdown or KO….

Pac cant withstand in Pacmans 100punches per Round

He may withstand 97 punches, but Pac would need only 3 to put him down – the lead left straight, the right hook and the left uppercut. Pac might not even need the last two punches as Floyd would go down from the left straight alone. I mean, Floyd is probably the best defensive fighter of all time next to Willie Pep and he’s fast as hell. Sure, he’d elude some if not most of Pacquiao’s punches, but remember that Manny also has bricks in his fists. Before he turned to a swarming combination puncher, he was a one-punch KO artist, and he still has that devastating power. In fact, his right hand is now as powerful as his vaunted left. And no matter what Floyd does defensively, Pac would eventually catch him and hit him. If Money runs, Pac will win by UD. If he plays hero and decides to mix it up, he’d be in the most fatal situation in his life.

      • I think the only point you that hasn’t been made is that Pacquiao is a 8-combo puncher against fighters who make no attempt to play DEFENSE. Floyd is not that same guy. All the fighters that supposedly gave Floyd “problems” is more of an opinion. I have watched the Hatton fight over 50 times. I saw alot of pushing, but never a real threat. Mosely landed 2 great shots in 1 round. Other than that, Floyd has not taken any big shots from any opponenets. The same cannot be said about Manny, who shows no desire to play defense and has suffered ruptured ear drums and much swelling from FAR LESS SUPERIOR BOXERS than Mayweather.
