Money can buy you ALOT of things in this life: big houses, cars, fancy things, and as much “BLING BLING” as you can handle. Money can buy you a lot of things, but not everything. In sports, having a wealthy payroll can buy you popular, talented players….but not BLING BLING. Here is the Top 10 MLB Payrolls for the 2011 season:

1. NEW YORK YANKEES
2. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
3. BOSTON RED SOX
4. LOS ANGELES ANGELS
5. CHICAGO WHITE SOX
6. CHICAGO CUBS
7. NEW YORK METS
8. SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
9. MINNESOTA TWINS
10. DETROIT TIGERS

The REALITY is that only 3 out of 10 of these teams made it to the Playoffs this year. And with the Conference Championships starting this weekend, the only team represented on this list is the #10 DETROIT TIGERS.

So you have to wonder if baseball is a game of TALENT or TEAM? What’s more important?

Is it more lucrative to buy out several “big name” contracts, and build a perceived “POWER HOUSE”? The New York Yankees have been the face of Major League Baseball for decades based on this concept. The have more money. They spend more money. They have more INDIVIDUAL talent. Which all brings in more money. They are stacked with talent, and if you are a fan, you are happy knowing that they could win it all each year. But in the last 10 years the Yankees have won 1 Championship, which means that 9 other times a team with less talent (at least on paper…check book paper that is), a lesser following, and with a much smaller bank account has won.

Is it more important to build and grow a TEAM? Out of 30 MLB teams, the Tampa Bay Rays are ranked 29th on the list of “Highest Payroll” and yet, they were sent packing after one round of playoffs, just like the Yankees and Phillies. Their success is based solely on their ability to build a group of hard-working, BELIEVERS.

In my COUCH EXPERT OPINION, it takes both. Pitching is a commodity that is well worth every penny. Teams should spend as much as they can bare on these talented “FIELD GENERALS”. But when it comes to the rest of a team’s roster, the most TALENTED player doesn’t always make the BEST teammate. You need guys who play with 100% effort EVERY game. Guys who will lay down a bunt when asked, will sprint to first base to a avoid a double-play, and ride the bench when needed. And the truth is you just don’t ASK or WANT this from a guy that you are paying $100,000. Instead, you are paying him to be a SLUGGER, and as soon as he has a few “off” games in the Playoffs, your RATE OF RETURN has diminished.

In my opinion, the last 2 rounds of baseball will be great for the sport. For once, baseball has become as unpredictable as the NBA and NFL. The only team you know will definitely be successful in the end is the team you didn’t expect in the beginning.
