OLD TIGER vs YOUNG LION

Recent comments by golf great Greg Norman have sparked much debate in the sports world.

Norman stated in an interview, “What I’m seeing is that Tiger’s really intimidated by Rory [McIlroy]. When have you ever seen him intimidated by another player? Never. But I think he knows his time’s up and that’s normal; these things tend to go in 15-year cycles.”

While some may agree with Norman’s assessment, I personally do not. While I do understand his view that Rory McIlroy seems to be the current “big thing” in the sport, my problem is with the word “INTIMIDATED“. TheFreeDictionary.com defines the word “INTIMIDATED” as 1. To make timid; fill with fear. 2. To coerce or inhibit by or as if by threats. I do not agree whatsoever with the use of the word intimidated. Norman may be speaking to some of his own inner demons as his 331-week reign as the #1 ranked golfer was forever eclipsed by a young Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods. (reigned 623 weeks) But I don’t think Tiger is going through the same thing. Golf being an every man (or woman) for himself sport, and not a one-on-one sport, I don’t think many of these guys walk out on a course, intimidated by another player. I’m sure it’s a little different if you are playing in the same group with a guy who is draining birdie after birdie, and you’re 4+, but all other players are out-of-sight-out-of-mind.

I don’t think Tiger is anywhere near being intimidated. We’ve tried to call players like Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, and even Bubba Watson were the “NEXT” big thing, after Tiger’s injuries and personal life caused a decline in his playing level. It still hasn’t happened. Rory McIlroy is now the next player to be tagged as Tiger’s successor. I do believe he will pan out better than the previous guys, but I still think Tiger’s view of him is different. Tiger is not, INTIMIDATED, but he is very AWARE of Rory. Tiger is definitely AWARE that his playing has declined. And for the first time in his career, I think he is AWARE that there is another player who can be a viable challenge to him when it comes to viewer and professional perceptions. And that in itself is a different frame of mind that he [Tiger], or we [his fans] have never had to cope with.
